I'm really enjoying this poetry challenge and encourage everyone to check out some of the other poetry being created by bloggers taking part in it. I'm being exposed to forms of poetry I never knew existed! It's fun trying out various forms and stretching my creativity more than I usually do.
Ever have a dog that barks at everything and won't stop? That pretty much sums up the character of our border collie Olive. She barks at everything! Someone walking across the street, a leaf falling on the ground, a bird fluttering from branch to branch. She's also loving, loyal, playful and sweet. Yesterday, however, her barking overshadowed all other positive traits she might possess. During my moments of frustration, when my head felt as if it were about to shatter and my ears bruised, I decided to try to express what I was feeling in a poem.

Our beloved dog Olive

Our beloved dog Olive
Shattered
My mantram is buried beneath shards of membrane
hacked from consciousness and heaped in no
particular pattern.
A labyrinth of thoughts and emotions
twisted and mired into one abstract painting
reflect the high pitched sound waves hurled
through the air from the vocal chords of my border
collie to my violated eardrums.
I wish my dog would stop barking!!!
Excellently expressed! I know a yapping dog would shatter all of my concentration, that's for sure!

Well, your first problem is you named her after my grandma who never stopped complaining, Olive. LOL. But, she should listen to you. You told her so eloquently! :) Loved the poem.

I think writing so much poetry this month (and not nearly enough because I haven't been keeping up and posting everyday..I give great credit to those of you have!)...has shown me how much I enjoy poetry. Not just writing it but also reading it.
DeleteOver the years I stopped reading fiction and writing poetry, I think because I found that there was so much that could be learned via nonfiction. I started seeing anything else but the factual as trivial...
But I'm realizing both serve a purpose...Knowledge is one thing but creativity helps us take what we know and see it in different ways. Both are essential in our path towards understanding. Poetry expresses the things of life, the emotions, experiences, concepts that the intellectual can try to write a lengthy book to describe can be summed up by the poet in a sentence.
So far, this is what my participation this month has had me discover. :)

This is so good! I love it! There us nothing worse than a yapping dog, especially when you want to sleep.

ReplyDeleteAs a former owner of 2 highly active dogs, I know how irritating the yapping can be. Sounds like you need a helping hand from the one and only Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Milan! (smile) Olive is still a beauty though.

Day 7: Golden Sand
Oh I'd love to have the dog whisperer come! Yeah, she still is a beauty that's for sure. Just very active and attentive...can't blame her though. That is definitely a trait known for her breed. Thanks for stopping by. :)
DeleteLOL can totally relate! My pomeranian, Dave, does that when the whole family is eating. He yaps at my dad most especially haha! It can be irritating, most especially because he has a high-pitched bark. Cute poem! :-)

DeleteFirst off Olive is a beauty. Her barking is showing that she is excited by all she sees! I can relate. I live in an apartment building where everyone on my floor has a door. The noise can be a bit much at times! I love animals though so I just try to shake it off, but some days your poem expresses exactly how I feel! Great job! :-)

DeleteThankfully I've never owned a dog that incessantly barked though Cody sometimes lets his voice heard throughout the area. Many of my neighbors dogs seem to possess over-active voice boxes and it can cause the strain on relationships as I've been forced to call the cops because of dogs yelping at midnight. That said barking dogs are good for protection and they just want their voice heard :)

Looks like your dog is a bit opinionated, can't help barking at everything. :-) I'm sure that if she ever stops, you'd miss all the barking.
